Abitibi-Témiscamingue… Sites to Discover; the Past to Uncover is an invitation to explore our region's history. With some thirty descriptions of heritage attractions, this site provides an overview of the development of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. It has been expressly written for all those who wish to become acquainted with our corner of Quebec and to understand the changes it has undergone over time.
This guide is divided into six sections. The first five of these deal with the major themes of the region's history. Thus, the first section describes aspects of its natural history. The second focuses on the rich cultural tradition of Native populations that have inhabited the region over a period of 8 000 years. The third takes us to the heart of development of the forestry industry. The fourth presents various phases of settlement in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, and the fifth outlines the history of mining development. The sixth and final section is devoted to markers of the past that are scattered throughout the countryside and deserve to be noticed.
A list of available services has been provided for each of these attractions. A map of the region and contact information for the various sites mentioned may be found in this website.
We strongly recommend using this site in conjunction with the official tourist guide for the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region when visiting the area. We also recommend checking the symbols for services offered since some of the sites have no tourist reception facilities.
We trust that your journey through time via the sites described, with their memories of bygone days, will help you appreciate the role of history in moulding our large and beautiful region.
Enjoy your visit!
